Should you go Organic?
The choice to eat organic can be tricky, because the medical field is torn about what to recommend. In fact, we may not have an answer on the topic for decades! Here’s what to know to make the best decision for yourself:
Stuff to know about Organic foods:
Organic foods are not treated by synthetic pesticides, hormones, or antibiotics.
They are roughly 10%-50% more expensive than non-organic foods.
Both organic and non-organic foods contain similar amounts of nutrients.
When it comes to pesticide exposure, there’s a lot to talk about.
Older pesticides have proven to be toxic to the human body, to water, and to soil. The effects of these pesticides linger for years.
Currently, all pesticides allowed in international trade have no genotoxic qualities - they won’t damage DNA.
The biggest threat of current pesticide use is overexposure. However, in limited quantities, no significant issues have been found.
People who eat organic for as little as 6 days have a 60.5% drop in pesticide residue found in their bodies.
Currently, the World Health Organization claims that non-organic produce should not have a significant effect on the human body. However, previous iterations of “safe” pesticides have been proven toxic long-term. Pesticide residue is still found in large quantities in people, and it is fairly easy to remove- simply by being organic for one week.
Going organic may not be possible for everyone, and it may not be necessary for anyone. Only time will tell.
So, how do you make a decision? Use your intuition and your budget.
“Live simply, so others can simply live.” - Mahatma Gandhi or Mother Teresa.
Seriously- we don’t know which person said this, but they both seem credible, no?
Sometimes, we need a reminder that the only things we truly own in this world are our bodies and our time. Beyond that, everything is impermanent.
When we reconsider our priorities, we make more conscious choices - we consume less, we experience more, and we create a world that is a little bit more equitable. Focus on what is real this week - Live simply, so others can simply live.
